Book Release: Windsor Forum

CNU DC participants Stephanie E. Bothwell, Peter J. Hetzel, Steven W. Hurtt and Dhiru Thadani announce the publication of their book, "Windsor Forum on Design Education: Toward an Ideal Curriculum to Reform Architectural Education." Together with CNU co-founder Andrés M. Duany, they are the editors of this volume which discusses architectural pedagogy, curricula, and proposals for reform. From the book's description:

"While minor reforms have filtered through certain schools, the general trend has continued to be a self-referential intellectual isolation and a general distancing from the needs of society and the natural environment. There has certainly not been anything like a reform proposal at the level of a curriculum entire. It seems that those in a position to effect change, and who would wish to do so, have been bound by institutional inertia, faculty territoriality, and accreditation criteria.

"With this in mind, and encouraged by the possibility that real reform might occur in at least one place, a few educators called for the creation of an ideal yet real curriculum -- one that would better address the needs of society, the natural environment, and places of historic value.

"To this end, Bothwell, Duany, Hetzel, Hurtt, and Thadani gathered an array of sympathetic and concerned architecture faculty and practioners, along with sociologists, theologians, philosophers, landscape architects, and regular folk. During a long weekend at Windsor, Florida, in April 2002, we reviewed the underlying philosophies and structures of some well known past and present models of architectural education, and speculated on new ones. This publication collects the presentations, discussions, and proposals."

The book is published by the New Urban Press and is available for $35 including shipping. Click here to download an order form.

Local Members Bring Home Charter Awards

Local members won outstanding recognition at the 2004 Congress for the New Urbanism's Charter Awards. Firms and universities in the D.C. area won 6 out of 15 awards, as well as two out of three honorable mentions in the Student/Faculty category. This exceeded by far the number of awards earned by any other region, and demonstrates the tremendous concentration of talent that exists in the local community of urban design professionals. Congratulations to all of the winners!
