Robinson Landing Tour and Happy Hour
CNUDC met at Robinson Landing in Alexandria and toured the site as well as some of the interior spaces. After, we walked to King Street and gathered for happy hour
How Healthy Communities Can Help Solve the Heath and Healthcare Crisis in the U.S.? with Erik J. Aulestia at Torti Gallas + Partners

Headlines remind us that there is both a health crisis and a healthcare crisis in the U.S. These seem like intractable problems, but what if planning and urban design could help to solve these issues? We’ve heard that healthy community design strategies can promote better population health, but how much, really? Using the available high-quality research, TG+P developed a quantitative comparative case study tool, “The Community Health Report Card,” that can project the health benefits of one built community versus another based on their design. We then used this tool to compare the King Farm TND to the nearby conventional suburban development Willow Oaks to project the specific population health benefits of one versus the other.

The Wharf: Urban Waterfront Transformation and Placemaking

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) DC Chapter and The Wharf organized an all-day symposium and tour of this stellar addition to DC’s waterfront. A renowned group of speakers involved in the project addressed the history of the site, design and planning, development, placemaking strategies, community engagement, and sustainability.
The event included multiple panels, lunch, and a site tour for participants.
2019 KEA Colloquium
April 5-6, 2019
Although awareness of the value of quality urban form has been growing in recent decades, given the contemporary “context”, are current imperatives of more beautiful and welcoming habitats increasingly being considered just “frosting on the cake”, obscured by way more substantial “problems” and “solutions”? This colloquium is intended to focus on the nature of the present urban predicament, offering different opinions on this matter and how a curriculum in architecture/urban design should be shaped to address it. ln addition, it focused on how to prepare tomorrow’s architects and urban designers to address the “immediate issues of our age” from climate change to social inequity, affordable housing and technological innovation in a variety of physical contexts.
Networking Happy Hour
